Yarn consumption depends on three things: the area you're covering, the yarn weight (thicker yarn covers more area per yard), and the stitch (a bobble stitch eats far more yarn than a lacy mesh of the same size). The calculator multiplies a base consumption per 4×4 in square for your yarn weight by a stitch factor drawn from real swatches, then adds a 12% safety margin so you never run out one row from the end.
The most accurate method is always your own swatch: crochet a 4×4 in (10×10 cm) square in the exact yarn, hook and stitch, measure the yarn it used, and type that number into the swatch box. The calculator then scales your real figure to your project.

A baby blanket (30×36 in / 75×90 cm) in worsted/aran yarn needs roughly 1,000–1,500 yards (900–1,400 m). A throw (50×60 in) needs 1,500–2,500 yards; a queen blanket 3,000–4,000 yards. Textured stitches use 20–40% more. Use the calculator above with your own gauge for an exact figure.
A standard 6×60 in (15×150 cm) scarf in worsted weight uses about 400–600 yards (365–550 m) — usually 2–3 skeins. Chunky yarn needs fewer yards but more skeins by weight.
Crochet a 10×10 cm (4×4 in) swatch in your stitch, then unravel it and measure the yarn used — or weigh it. Yarn needed = (project area ÷ swatch area) × yarn in swatch, plus 10–15% for safety. That is exactly what this calculator does.
Tighter tension, a larger hook, a different yarn weight, or a more textured stitch (bobbles, cables, puffs) all change consumption. Always buy one extra skein from the same dye lot.
